Canadian Elections

The campaign process in Canada is much quicker than in America and much less costly. Canadian politicians manage to say and promise everything in less time and that is good. Whether Canadian or American, no matter the party or affiliations politicians are similar. Initially the 'intention' to serve the people and improve conditions is a motivating factor until the 'let's make a dope deal' world of political survival takes hold. It does not matter which party, which ideology, which benefit or which deal, the purpose is quickly clouded. Unless strict attention is paid to their records many who are elected and paid to represent instead 'follow party line' and that is bad. Some even turn on long held convictions and campaign rhetoric disregarding the very voters who put them in office. The most recent and appalling example was the multi-member twist and bend over the gun registry. If that example wasn't one of the best there are few that can compare.
This of course would not be so pervasive a practice if the press did keep them honest. Apathy amongst the people renders the press as watchdog or guardian of the public trust. There are those in the media who still tell the truth and who still behave as reporters. Most people do not care about your opinions so it might be prudent to just stick to the news. Concentrate on the truth and investigate possible wrongs always doing so with an open mind and proceed only when sure. Above all refrain from interjecting your own beliefs and do not get involved politically.
This ideal is hard for the media to follow in a world full of corruption, big business, deal making and governmental directives designed to gather the people into a leaders cause such as 'a march to war' or a mass enthusiasm for a particular belief. However, many questions remain unanswered, many conspiracies are left alone and too many lies go unchallenged. Do they all fall under the umbrella of a nation's security? I think not. Instead, the press conveniently ignores , disregards and too quickly forgets as the concentration abilities of the people decline so goes the credibility of the press. It is easier to just move on to the next topic no matter how mundane and unimportant. Celebrity antics overshadow a nation's fight for freedom and democracy and that is sad. Coverage of the conflict in Libya is completely insufficient and as pathetic as the help that has been provided to the people of Libya by the rest of the world.

  1. this a quote from the Globe&Mail "After five years of mostly competent government, nobody outside the fringes is warning that giving them more power would render Canada unrecognizable."

thank goodness that we still have people on the fringe, I say on the contrary, they have spent five solid years campaigning night and day for a majority government, and doing very little actual governing. They have free-loaded on the prudent legacy of Paul Martin the whole time.

The one substantive initiative was to cut the GST - which was regarded almost universally as a stupid blunder. Even Mulroney is on record on that.

They have suppressed and gagged their back-benchers for five years, afraid that they would blurt out the truth.

And you don't think they intend to "render Canada unrecognizable"?

    Right.

    Good bye universal health care.
    Good bye CBC
    Good bye election spending restraints
Good bye to an independent judiciary.
Good bye to an independent professional public service.

This is a guy who stood up in Parliament and voted in favour of withholding evidence.
This is a guy who stood up in Parliament and voted in favour of perjury.

And yet you consider this government to be "mostly competent".

    Wow.

  2. Incompetent is not harsh enough a criticism in my opinion. Re-election not only encourages it condones the hypocracy, corruption, nepotism, mis-management and down right lying to which the Canadian public has been subjected by the Conservative Party. Vote the bumbs out! A minority Liberal parliament with the NDP with the balance of power is strategic voting Canada.
